چکیده

We compare P-wave spectra of quarry blasts and earthquakes recorded by the southern California seismic network (SCSN) between 2000 and 2005, with the goal of developing methods to discriminate between these events. We process the spectra using an iterative robust least-squares method to isolate source, receiver, and propagation path contributions. This corrects for first-order attenuation structure, as well as near-receiver site effects and any errors in the instrument response functions. Using the earthquake spectra and a simple ω 2 source model, we compute an empirical Green’s function (EGF) to remove the trade-off between the source terms and other parameters in our model. A constant stress-drop model gives a good fit to the observed average earthquake spectra over a wide range of moment magnitude, but provides a mediocre fit to the average quarry blast spectra, which have a generally steeper fall-off at high frequencies than ω . We also compare Pand S-wave amplitudes and find modestly smaller average S amplitudes for the explosions compared to the earthquakes. For southern California, the root-mean-square (rms) misfit of P-wave spectra to an ω 2 source model is a more reliable explosion discriminant than the S-to-P amplitude ratio and works for about 90% of the events.

Short Note Crustal Thickness Variations across the Blue Ridge Mountains, Southern Appalachians: An Alternative Procedure for Migrating Wide-Angle Reflection Data

Migration of wide-angle reflections generated by quarry blasts suggests that crustal thickness increases from 38 km beneath the Carolina Terrane to 47–51 km along the southeastern flank of the Blue Ridge. The migration algorithm, developed for generating single-fold images from explosions and earthquakes recorded with isolated, short-aperture arrays, uses the localized slant stack as an interme...

Automatic Classification of Seismic Signals at Mt. Vesuvius Volcano, Italy, Using Neural Networks

We present a new strategy for reliable automatic classification of local seismic signals and volcano-tectonic earthquakes (VT). The method is based on a supervised neural network in which a new approach for feature extraction from short period seismic signals is applied. To reduce the number of records required for the analysis we set up a specialized neural classifier, able to distinguish two ...

Review of Various Clustering Methods Used To Ca - tegorize Seismic Data into Earthquake and Mining

Earthquake mainly produces Pand Swave at the point of occurrence. Mining site that mines the geological material from earth often makes the quarry blasts on the surface of earth to accelerate the mining process instead of drilling. This mining blast also causes the same wave as the earthquake. It is very difficult to differentiate between two of them as the characteristics of waves produced by ...

Application of Self Organized Maps and Curvilinear Component Analysis to the Discrimination of the Vesuvius Seismic Signals

This paper reports on the unsupervised analysis of seismic signals recorded by four stations situated on the Vesuvius area in Naples, Italy. The dataset under examination is composed of earthquakes and false events like thunders, quarry blasts and man-made undersea explosions. The goal is to use these specific data for comparing the performance of three projection methods that are well known to...

Seismic Calibration and Discrimination in Northeast Russia

In an effort to obtain ground truth (GT) classifications in support of nuclear explosion monitoring for continental regions of northeastern Russia, we relocated and assigned GT classifications to 118 seismic events reported in the International Seismological Centre (ISC) supplemented with previously unavailable local data. Of the relocated events, 26 events are classified as GT10. From these ev...
